I was privileged to take part in our Holy Father’s recent Apostolic Visit to our nation. I was struck by the Holy Father’s strong voice and hopeful message. Three years ago, I was present at his installation Mass in Rome. As principal teacher and shepherd of the universal Church, the Holy Father always conveys a powerful message. I am thankful that I had the opportunity to see and hear Pope Benedict XVI, and that I was able to visit with bishops and priests from many dioceses who are wrestling with pastoral concerns that are similar to and different from those of our local Church.

Six years ago, Bishop John C. Nienstedt visited our Diocese on a hot July day to meet the diocesan staff and local media, only to return a week before his installation on an even warmer day on August 6, 2001, the Feast of the Transfiguration. All in attendance were amazed at the number of family and friends who made the trip to Sleepy Eye for the event. Clearly the third bishop of our Diocese was well thought of and appreciated for his ministry in the Archdiocese of Detroit. Personally, I have always been impressed by Bishop Nienstedt’s ability to unhesitatingly say yes to the Holy Father’s appointments. In fact, he agreed to be the shepherd of this local Church, sight unseen. Some would call it a leap of faith, others obedience. During his first few months here, Bishop Nienstedt often referred to a disarming book entitled, Who Moved my Cheese? The simple story line highlighted the fact that each of us needs to learn to deal with change. The more we are able to embrace an outlook that is both objective and proactive, the more easily we will be able to flourish in the midst of the changing complexities of life.

While Bishop Nienstedt’s style was different from that of Bishop Lucker, our second bishop and beloved shepherd of twenty-four years, Bishop Nienstedt showed us how to start over, meet new friends, and lead by pastoral example. During the last months of Bishop Lucker’s illness, Bishop Nienstedt visited him weekly at the Good Council Cancer Home in St. Paul. After Bishop Lucker’s death, Bishop Nienstedt helped us to grieve the loss of our second bishop.

By the end of his first year, Bishop Nienstedt had visited every parish and school in the Diocese. During his six years as our shepherd, he consulted with and presided over the diocesan councils and committees, fostered a Catholic atmosphere for vocations to the ministerial priesthood and religious life, helped initiate our Diocesan Ministries Appeal, Catholic Charities and diaconate program, and continued our strategic plan for parishes to ensure and strengthen pastoral ministry throughout the changing landscape of our fifteen county area.

On Sunday, May 18, 2008, the Christian faithful are invited to Olivia, Minnesota, to show our appreciation to Archbishop Nienstedt for his six years as shepherd of this local Church and to wish him well as he begins his new appointment as the Archbishop of St. Paul and Minneapolis and Metropolitan for the Province of Minnesota, North and South Dakota. Let us join together in prayer and thanksgiving.

Tuve el gran privilegio de ser parte de la reciente visita apostólica de nuestro Santo Padre a nuestra nación. Me impresiono su voy potente y mensaje de esperanza. Hace tres años, estuve presente en su Misa de instalación en Roma. Como Pastor de la Iglesia universal, el Santo Padre siempre transmite un mensaje enérgico. Estoy agradecido por la oportunidad de haberlo visto y escuchado y también de visitar con los obispos y sacerdotes de otras diócesis.

Hace seis años, en el mes de Julio y bastante calor, Obispo John C. Nienstedt visitó nuestra diócesis para conocer al personal diocesano y los medios de comunicación. Una semana más tarde con más calor, vendría para su Misa de Instalación, 6 de Agosto del 2001 - Transfiguración del Señor. Todos los presentes estuvieron sorprendidos por el número de familias y amigos que asistieron al acontecimiento en Sleepy Eye. Personalmente, siempre me ha impresionado la habilidad de Obispo Nienstedt de aceptar sin la menor vacilación el nombramiento por parte de nuestro Santo Padre. De hecho, él aceptó ser el pastor de esta Iglesia local, sin saber nada de nuestra diócesis. Algunos dirán que fue su fe otros dirán que fue obediencia. Durante sus primeros meses Obispo Nienstedt con frecuencia se refirió al libro ¿Quién movió mi queso? Esta simple historia narra el hecho que cada uno de nosotros necesita aprender a enfrentar cambios. Cuanto más podamos admitir una visión que sea objetiva y previsora, será más fácil alcanzar el éxito en medio de los cambios complejos de la vida.

Mientras que el estilo de Obispo Nienstedt fue diferente al de Obispo Lucker, pastor amoroso que sirvió por veinte cuatro años, Obispo Nienstedt nos guió como empezar de nuevo, conocer nuevas amistades y liderar con el ejemplo pastoral. Durante los últimos meses de enfermedad de Obispo Lucker, Obispo Nienstedt lo visitó semanalmente en el Good Council Cancer Home en St. Paul. Después del fallecimiento de Obispo Lucker, Obispo Nienstedt estuvo allí y nos ayudó a aceptar la pérdida de nuestro segundo obispo.

Al término de su primer año, Obispo Nienstedt tuvo la oportunidad de visitar todas las parroquias y escuelas en nuestra diócesis. Durantes sus seis años como nuestro pastor, tuvo la oportunidad de trabajar con los concilios y comités diocesanos, fomentar un ambiente por las vocaciones al ministerio sacerdotal y la vida religiosa, ayudar con el inicio de la Campaña de los Ministerios Diocesanos, Caridades Católicas y el programa del diaconado permanente y continuó con el plan estratégico para las parroquias el de garantizar y consolidar el ministerio pastoral a través de los cambios en nuestros condados.

El domingo 18 de Mayo, 2008, se invita a los fieles para dar aprecio y agradecimiento a Arzobispo John Nienstedt por los seis años como nuestro pastor de esta Iglesia local. Le deseamos todo el éxito ahora que comienza su nuevo cargo como el Arzobispo de San Pablo y Minneapolis y metropolitano para la provincia de Minnesota, Dakota del Norte y Sur. Juntémonos en oración y agradecimiento.
